Our fish and chip van hire in East Sussex
Few meals are as universally loved as fish and chips. That’s why a van works for so many kinds of event. Popular choices include curry sauce, pie and chips and haddock and chips, and we are often booked for work Christmas parties and company team days.
We need a level, firm place to park the van, close to where people will eat, and we agree exactly where before the day.
- You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
- You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
- On the day, we park on the agreed spot and set up.
- We fry to order and serve from the hatch at the agreed time.
- We pack up afterwards and leave the spot as we found it.
Pricing in East Sussex
Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is often good value, as there is no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. We’ll send you a quote.

Landmarks near Eastbourne
In Eastbourne, that can mean an event near St Andrew, Princes Park and Stafford Junior School and the streets around them. Also close by are The King's Arms Public House (0.9 miles south-east), WMG Academy for Young Engineers (1.5 miles south-west) and Ratton School (1.1 miles west). Eastbourne’s nearest station is Hampden Park station, about 0.7 miles north-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Pevensey Castle (3 miles north-east) and Royal Sussex Regimental Museum (1 mile south-east). Green spaces nearby include Combe Hill.
Planning a chip van in East Sussex
East Sussex covers everything from Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea to 240 small villages and hamlets, and a chip van suits every kind of setting. In towns, plan parking and access; in villages, tell us about lanes and ground. Parts of East Sussex are within a few miles of the High Weald National Landscape and the South Downs National Park, so check venue rules on vehicles for countryside events. Around 106 places in East Sussex are close to the coast, so we often plan a sheltered side for the queue, and fish and chips feels right at home.
Eastbourne: A green space like Princes Park is tempting, but a catering van there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s. Coming by train? The closest railway station is Hampden Park station, roughly 0.7 miles north-west of the centre. In Eastbourne, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. For winter events, when it is dark by about 3:55pm, the van and the queue need lighting.
Planning for dietary needs
A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:
- Arrange an alternative for anyone we can’t cater for
- Tell us about vegetarian and vegan guests early
- Ask about allergies on your invitation or sign-up form
- Give us separate numbers for children
On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We arrive in good time, set up, cook and serve, and keep in touch with you about timings.
A gazebo by the van keeps the queue dry.
Before you choose a spot
We’ll be honest if a spot won’t work, and suggest an alternative. What matters most:
- Room in front of the hatch for a queue
- A spot near your guests
- Lighting nearby for evening events
Food your guests will love
Mushy peas
Mushy peas are a must for plenty of fish and chip fans.
Gravy
Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.
Why fried-to-order beats a buffet
A big takeaway order arrives late and lukewarm. The van cooks right there, so it is crisp when it’s handed over.
Questions to ask before you book
- When payment is due
- What the van needs: space, access, power
- Travel, tolls and road charges
- Whether there is a minimum
Cannot we just order from the chip shop?
Some hosts try a takeaway order. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.
For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the event.
Common questions in East Sussex
Do you clear up afterwards?
We clear the van’s area after service. Let us know about bins for guests.
Can you cook in the rain?
The weather does not stop the van, because the cooking happens inside. Soft ground after heavy rain is the bigger issue, so have a hard-surface spot in mind.
How soon do we need to book?
Early, particularly for summer Saturdays and Christmas party Fridays. Even at short notice, it is worth asking.
Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?
Our battered fish contains gluten, because standard batter uses wheat flour. Let us know about coeliac guests in advance, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible.
How long are you on site?
That depends on your numbers and timings. We confirm all the timings beforehand.
Can fish and chips be the only food?
Yes. A portion of fish, chips and peas is a proper meal.
How fast is service?
It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Give us your numbers and service window, and we’ll plan service around it.
