Birthday party food ideas for a crowd

How to feed a big birthday party without spending it in the kitchen.

The problem with party food

Whoever is hosting a big birthday usually ends up in the kitchen. The easiest fix is to hand the cooking to someone else, so you can enjoy the party.

A fish and chip van

A van on the drive or the lawn, frying fresh, is a treat for every age. It suits milestone birthdays, family parties and garden get-togethers, and it gives guests something to queue and chat over. Sausage and chips covers children and anyone who doesn’t want fish.

Other ideas

  • A grazing table for arrival, followed by hot food
  • Pizza, burgers or a hog roast
  • A birthday cake and an ice cream stop for dessert

When to serve

For an afternoon party, serve about an hour after guests arrive. For an evening party, serve before the drinks really get going.

Children

Count children separately and tell your caterer. Smaller portions and plain options make life easier. See children’s party food.

At home

Check where the van can park, tell your neighbours, and think about the queue. See how much space a van needs.

Milestone birthdays

For a 40th, 50th, 60th or bigger, guests often span three generations. Familiar food that everyone enjoys takes the pressure off. A fish and chip van, a cake and a few drinks is a simple, generous combination.

Surprise parties

If it’s a surprise, plan the timing so the van arrives and sets up before the guest of honour does, and ask the caterer to park where it won’t give the game away. Tell the caterer it’s a surprise so they don’t call the wrong person.

Keeping it manageable

For a big party at home, keep the rest simple: plenty of seats, bins, drinks in a cool box and some lights for when it gets dark. Ask a couple of friends to help with clearing up as the evening goes on.

When to cut the cake

Cut the cake after everyone has eaten and before people start to leave, usually an hour or so after the main food. If there are speeches, do them just before the cake while everyone is together.

Quick answers

Can a chip van come to a house party?

Yes, if there’s a level, firm spot for it, such as a drive.

What about the neighbours?

Let them know, and keep the van’s serving side away from their windows.
