What works
- A hot-food van, such as fish and chips, for families who stay for the afternoon
- A cake stall run by parents
- Ice lollies and drinks
- Healthy options for children
Allergies and school policies
Many schools have nut-free policies and children with serious allergies. Tell any trader about school rules in advance, and ask for allergen information to display. Fish and gluten are both major allergens, so make sure families know what’s in each dish.
Where to put the van
The van needs a level, firm spot it can reach without driving across the playground while children are around. Ask the school about vehicle access before and after the fair, and keep the queue away from rides and games.
Raising money
Traders often pay the PTA a pitch fee or a share of takings. Agree it in writing. Some PTAs pre-sell meal tickets to help the trader plan numbers.
Sports days
A van at the end of sports day is a lovely treat for families. Agree a serving time with the school and plan the queue.
Planning with the school
Talk to the head teacher and site manager early. They’ll want to know when the van arrives and leaves, how it gets on site without crossing the playground while children are around, where it parks and what documents the trader holds. Some schools prefer the van to park just outside the gates.
Getting numbers right
Tell the trader how many families usually come, and whether the fair runs at lunchtime or after school. Pre-sold meal tickets help, and make it easier to plan.
Sports days
For a sports day, a van at the end of the afternoon gives families a reason to stay and celebrate. Agree a time with the school so it doesn’t clash with the races.
Healthy options
Schools often want to balance treats with healthier choices. A fish and chip van can sit alongside a fruit stall or a salad table. Families can choose for themselves.
