FAQs for London

Can you serve after a service at St George the Martyr?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Can the van park in Newington Gardens?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

How fast is service?

That depends on numbers, menu and timing. Give us your numbers and service window, and we will plan to keep the queue moving.

Is there something for children?

Yes. Sausage and chips is a favourite with children. Include children in your numbers.

Will the van be in our photos?

It usually ends up in a few photos. Bunting or lights make it even better.

Is grass a problem?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and send a picture if you can.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

No, not as standard: batter is generally made with wheat flour. Let us know and we will tell you what we can do.

Do you come to London?

We do. We serve events in London and across Greater London. Send us your date to check availability.

Diets, allergies and planning

A little planning makes sure everyone is looked after. Try these:

  • Give us a contact for the day who is not the couple
  • Have a back-up for guests with special diets
  • Talk to us about evening numbers
  • Don’t forget your suppliers

It’s kind to include suppliers working late when you give us numbers.

A little sign by the van tells guests what’s on.

Is a fish and chip van right for your wedding?

A second sit-down meal in the evening is expensive and formal. Fish and chips from the hatch keeps it informal. Distance and any road charges make a difference, so tell us exactly where your wedding is.

What you get with us

  • Served hot, straight from the hatch
  • No kitchen, no crockery, no washing up
  • Events in London and across Greater London
  • No surprises in your quote

A closer look at the menu

Pie and chips

A pie and chips is proper comfort food, and it is especially welcome on a cold day.

Cod and chips

Cod and chips is the meal most people picture when they think of a chip shop. Fried to order in the van, it goes out hot and crisp.

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is generally the easier option.

Frying for a crowd at home isn’t a good idea: big pans of hot oil, children and garden parties don’t mix. Leave the frying to a van built for it.

Working with your venue

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can hold the date.

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

The process

Here’s how the day normally runs: the van arrives and we set up, the oil comes up to temperature, and we serve hot from the hatch at the agreed time. At midsummer, sunset in London is about 9:20pm, so the van can serve before or after your sunset photos. In late May, sunset is about 8:50pm, and in late September about 7:05pm.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we will confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for your guests.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the route for the van
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
