Takeaway run or book a van?

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is typically simpler.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Brighton: your questions answered

What’s the nearest station to Brighton?

London Road (Brighton) station, in Brighton itself.

Is Brighton close to London?

Roughly 46 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Is grass a problem?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Let us know what the ground is like, and we will advise.

Can the van come to our fair?

Send us the event details, dates and pitch information and we will let you know if we are available.

What does the van need?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, that the van can reach easily. Send us a picture if you are not sure.

What’s on the menu?

Fish and chips, of course, plus sausage or pie and chips. Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy go on the side.

Do you do anything other than fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we will tell you what we can offer.

Can you come to a school event?

Yes. We’ll need a safe route onto the site away from children.

How the day works

You do not need to do much on the day: show us the spot, tell us when to start, and enjoy your event. The frying and serving are down to us. Summer events in Brighton have daylight until about 9:15pm at midsummer and about 7:05pm by late September, which helps evening trading. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, the pitch needs lighting.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your visitors.
  5. Last portion served, we tidy up and head off.

Getting ready for the day

  • Let us know the serving time
  • Give us a contact for the day
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site

Before you choose a spot

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but there are a few things to check:

  • Firm, level ground for the pitch
  • The landowner’s or organiser’s permission for the van
  • Somewhere firm if it rains

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

Our booking checklist

What affects the price in Brighton

These are the factors that matter most:

  • Numbers
  • The menu and how many choices
  • How far we travel
  • The minimum booking

Fish and chip van prices depend on the booking. A one-hour staff lunch is a different job from serving all afternoon at a fête. We set everything out in your quote.

What we need to know

For a quote, it helps to have:

  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • A photo of the space and the way in
  • The venue or postcode
  • Your date and serving time

Not sure of numbers yet? No problem: tell us the basics about your event, and we will quote on that. Start when you are ready: send us your details through our quote form.

Running an event in Brighton

Brighton is in Brighton and Hove. Tell us where your event in Brighton will be, and we will plan the route and the parking spot before the day. We serve 30 places across Brighton and Hove, from the larger towns to small villages.

An event in William Clarke Park means agreeing traders and vehicle routes with the landowner, generally the council. School fairs, for a school like Fairlight Primary School, are a natural fit for a fish and chip van. Events in and around the South Downs National Park, within about 7 miles of Brighton, frequently have rules about vehicles, ground and waste; we will follow the site’s requirements. The coast is within about 2 miles of Brighton, so for seaside events we plan a sheltered pitch.

Here we cover the BN1, BN2 and BN3 postcode area, so your event can be anywhere in it. Your event could be at a house on London Road, Isetta Square and Pelham Square, as long as there’s somewhere for the van. You will find Brighton on the A23 and A259, which makes the journey straightforward. Nearby, we also serve events in Hanover (1 mile south), Carlton Hill (1 mile south), West Hill (1 mile west), Hollingdean (1 mile north) and Seven Dials (1 mile west). Within a short drive, we also cover Brighton and Hove (3 miles west), Aldrington (3 miles west), Hangleton (3 miles west), Saltdean (4 miles south-east), East Saltdean (5 miles south-east) and Rottingdean (3 miles south-east). Brighton is one of the larger places we cover in Brighton and Hove, with lots of choice for events.

A little further out are Brighton General Hospital (0.7 miles east) and Old Police Cells Museum (1 mile south-west). Open spaces near Brighton include Newmarket Hill and Whitehawk Hill.

  • Local schools include Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (0.9 miles west) and Academy of Creative Training (0.9 miles south)
  • Local pubs include Park Crescent pub (within half a mile north-west)

Organising for someone else?

Organising a club, school or community event in Brighton? A fish and chip van draws people in and almost everyone likes it. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Tell us what your venue needs and we will work through them with you.

Diets, allergies and planning

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Settle the pitch terms early
  • Have other stalls for special diets
  • Share pitch details
  • Tell us about any school or event allergy policies

We arrive before the gates open to set up on the pitch, at the agreed time.

A sign at the entrance tells visitors hot food is available.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
